Crack Filling, Pothole Repair, and Infrared Repair: What Each Service Addresses

A condition-based comparison of crack filling, pothole and patch repair, and infrared asphalt repair—plus the warning signs that point to drainage or base failure.

Crack filling, pothole repair, and infrared repair are not interchangeable names for the same work. Each addresses a different condition. The visible opening is only the starting point; crack movement, damaged depth, water, base stability, traffic, and surrounding pavement determine whether a treatment is a reasonable fit.

Crack filling addresses selected open cracks

Crack treatment is intended to limit water and debris entering cracks that are suitable for sealing. Preparation matters. The crack and adjacent pavement need to be cleaned and the selected material installed according to its requirements. Weather, pavement temperature, crack condition, configuration, and reopening time all affect the work.

Crack filling does not rebuild broken pavement. Interconnected alligator cracking, movement, settlement, wide spalled edges, vegetation, or water pumping through the surface may indicate a deeper failure. Sealing the top of those conditions can hide the symptom without correcting the cause.

Pothole and patch repair replaces a defined failed area

A patch scope should identify the repair boundary, removal depth, base preparation, asphalt placement, compaction, and tie-in to surrounding pavement. If water or weak base caused the pothole, the estimate should address that condition within the repair limits or clearly state what is excluded.

The repair geometry matters. Ragged or moving edges make a poor boundary. The contractor should establish stable limits and a workable connection to the pavement that remains. Traffic, turning, drainage, and the shape of the failure can influence the repair detail.

Infrared repair reheats and reworks suitable asphalt

Infrared equipment heats an existing asphalt area so the material can be reworked and blended with additional repair mix. It may reduce the number of cold joints for a suitable surface defect or patch transition. It still requires correct preparation, material handling, grading, and compaction.

Infrared repair is not a substitute for removing unsuitable base or correcting a drainage failure. It may also be limited by pavement composition, contamination, thickness, prior treatments, weather, access, or the size and depth of the damaged area. A contractor should evaluate suitability rather than promise one method for every repair.

Signs that the scope may need to go deeper

  • The repaired area repeatedly sinks, cracks, or breaks apart.
  • Water ponds nearby or emerges through cracks and joints.
  • The pavement moves under traffic or has widespread interconnected cracking.
  • The edge has lost support or adjoining soil is eroding.
  • Multiple repairs overlap without a stable boundary.

A useful repair proposal separates quantities and methods

Ask for crack treatment, shallow repair, full-depth repair, infrared repair, base correction, drainage work, and traffic control to be described separately when more than one applies. The proposal should also state how repair areas are measured and how unexpected conditions will be documented.

Maintenance follows repair—not the other way around

Sealcoating or other surface maintenance may be considered after failures are evaluated and repaired, but a coating should not be used to disguise structural distress. The sequence should follow pavement condition, selected materials, weather, and the written scope.
